“Now is the time to make real the promise of democracy.”
— Martin Luther King

“When people are financially invested, they want a return.
When people are emotionally invested, they want to contribute.”
— Simon Sinek

Ukrainian Week will feature a series of 50-minute in-person talks on the Ukrainian language, Ukrainian literature, culture and history. It will take place on 8–10 April 2024, and is intended to offer both academic and non-academic audiences the chance to explore these topics (which are often little discussed outside of Ukraine). We will discuss both Ukraine's past and present, focusing not only on the current violence but also on the people of Ukraine and the beauty of their communities. Our ultimate goal is to support and celebrate the people of Ukraine in Ukraine, Edinburgh, and elsewhere in the world, and to emphasize the need for acceptance, tolerance and understanding. By highlighting these values, we hope that the audience will have the opportunity to critically approach cases of war with compassion, as well as to learn about Ukraine's history and culture. As they say, people tend to support what they are engaged in.

There are 11 confirmed major speakers: Prof. Andriy Danylenko (Pace University), Dr. Jonathon Turnbull (University of Oxford), Dr. Kateryna Dysa (University of Oxford, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy), Prof. Thomas Daiber (Justus Liebig University of Giessen), Dr. Olenka Z. Pevny (University of Cambridge), Dr. Kateryna Budz (University of Edinburgh), Dr. Martin Rohde (University of Vienna), Dr. Jan Fellerer (University of Oxford), Olha Khometa (University of Toronto), Olena Jennings (New York) and Dr. Oksana Lebedivna (University of Edinburgh).

The organizational committee is comprised of Dr. Oksana Lebedivna (Research Fellow and main organiser), Emme Strickland (MSc student), Pia Lehecka (PhD student), Aldo Berrios Castillo (PhD student), and Dr. Yana Proskurkina (Teaching Fellow, COL), with Prof. Patrick Honeybone as a staff advisor.

All talks are open to all and free of charge.
